Kathmandu Tour

The country's capital and largest city simultaneously reeks of history and the wear and tear of increasing modernity. The tightly packed historical center, with its squares and temples, continues to preserve a world light years away from the shanty towns, expensive hotels, restaurants and shops on the city's outskirts. Kathmandu is situated in a bowl shaped valley in central Nepal. The Kingdom extends about 885 km. east to west and 193 km. in width north to south. The entire terrain is like a steep incline, descending from the icy Himalayan heights to the hot Terai flatland within a short distance. The country has an area of 147,181 sq.km., and is positioned between 26022" to 30027' North Latitude and 80004' to 88012' East Longitude. It is bordered by China in the north and by India in the south, west and east. Nepal is a totally landlocked country...Chabahil, one of the most important historical place in Kathmandu, Nepal is famous for its Licchavi stupa, called the Charumati Vihara. According to the book, Dhanavajra Vajracharya, Licchavikalin Abhilekha, Kathmandu : Nepal Asiali Adyayan Sansthan, 2030 B.S. p-392, the stupa became an instant attraction point for pilgrims and Buddhist monks who visited the stupa for centuries. The stupa, according to most historians, dates back to the 3rd Century BC though actual dating has not been done to confirm this.Charumati was a daughter of Indian Emperor Ashoka. She was married to a Nepalese prince in Kathmandu. The large maidan or parade ground known as Tundikhel once marked the eastern boundary of the old city. It was inhabited, if legend is to be believed, by the demon Tundi, who kept the citizens of Kathmandu in a permanent state of fear. On the day of his death the townsfolk rode their horses over the gigantic corpse, an event commemorated every year in the Ghora Jatra or Horse Festival. The demon's evil spirit is said to be kept subdued by the trampling hooves. At one time both the king and the Royal Kumari would worship during the festival at the Bhadra Kali Shrine, but nowadays the Ghora Jatra has a more popular character.
