6 of Costa Rica's Natural Wonders

With its mind-boggling geographic diversity, the entire country of Costa Rica could be classed as a natural wonder, so picking out its most memorable highlights is no easy feat. Choosing from 26 National Parks and an endless landscape of cloud forests, volcanic peaks, rainforests, beaches and wetlands, here are just six of Costa Rica’s natural wonders. 1. Arenal Volcano National Park Costa Rica’s most active volcano (and among the most active in the world) is also one of its most visited tourist attractions and lies at the heart of the eponymous Arenal Volcano National Park. A perfectly formed cone rising 1,633 meters above the surrounding rainforest, Arenal Volcano is a striking sight and forms a dramatic backdrop to hiking expeditions, canopy tours and whitewater rafting excursions. Although its last eruption was back in 1968, Arenal’s constant lava flow and high level of geothermic energy means it’s too unstable to climb, but it’s worth the trip for the views alone, especially at night, when the trickling lava creates a dazzling natural lightshow. 2. Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica’s cloud forests are world famous and top of the list is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a spectacular 26,000-acre stretch of mist-shrouded highland forests linked by a network of suspension bridges and tree top walkways. One of the country’s top eco-tourism regions, Monteverde is most renowned for its incredible biodiversity, with more than 2,000 plant species; 1,200 amphibians.
