Pantanal is a vast wetland, in fact, it is the largest wetland in the world. This area is home to numerous plant and animal species. The majority of its surface is located in Brazil while the smaller parts extend through Bolivia and Paraguay. Besides from being a precious place for scientists and wildlife lovers, Pantanal is also a great tourist destination. By now, scientists have discovered 3500 plant species, 1000 bird species, 300 species of different mammals and over 9000 other animal species. Even though Brazil is famous for the Amazon rainforest many affirm that Pantanal is better for wildlife spotting. This amazing wetland is 20 times larger than the famous Everglades, Florida. During the rainy season 80% of Pantanal wetland is covered with water. Within the Pantanal area there are two protected areas; Pantanal Matogrossense National Park and the SESC Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve. Pantanal Matogrossense National Park is a national park in Mato Grosso region and it occupies the territory of 1350 sq km. Since the year 2000, Pantanal has been included into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Some significant efforts have been made in order to protect such an important ecosystem. The best period to visit national park is between May and September. Visitors can move on 150 km long road. Due to the territory characteristics the area has over 120 bridges which is a great thing for observation. The best time of the day for sightseeing is during the morning and evening. Visiting Pantanal does not necessarily have to be on foot or by car. Many visitors choose the blend with the nature and choose horseback riding. Visitors who prefer boat excursions can as well during October and April. Paraguayan River at that period because of more rain becomes great for such trips.
